History: This Christmas carol was composed in 1739 as a "hymn for Christmas Day" its creator Charles Wesley included it in a collection called Hymns and Sacred Poems. The lyrics were modified in 1754 by George Whitefield, who was a relative of the composer. In 1855 Felix Mendelssohn made the musical adaptation to the Hymn as we know it today. The last adaptation of the lyrics was made in 1961, the one we sing every Christmas.
