Historia: Este villancico fue compuesto en 1739 como un "himno para el día de Navidad" su creador Charles Wesley lo incluyó en una colección llamada Himnos y Poemas Sagrados. La letra tuvo su modificación en 1754 por George Whitefield, quien era familiar del compositor. En 1855 Felix Mendelssohn hace la adaptación musical al Himno tal y como lo conocemos hoy en día. La última adaptación de la letra fué hecha en 1961, la que cantamos en cada Navidad.
