Hi there! How's it going?
Now, we're going to talk about Simple Past Statements and Questions with Irregular Verbs.
What do we need to do with irregular verbs? The only way to use them is to learn how they are cojugated in the past tense. For example: let's take the verb do. If it were Simple Present we would say something like "I do my homework". But in the past tense do changes to did; I did my homework. And it's the same for everyone.
- You did your homework.
- He did his homework.
- She did her homework.
- We did our homework.
- They did their homework.
Now, if we're going to use the negative form, again we use didn't just like the irregular verbs, and our verb goes back to the present tense. Since we are using the auxiliary verb didn't, our verb is not going to be in the past tense. It's going to be in the present tense. For example:
- I didn't do my homework.
- You didn't do your homework.
- He didn't do his homework.
- She didn't do her homework.
- We didn't do our homework.
- They didn't do their homework.
So, when we're talking in the past tense in an affirmative statement, that's when our verb goes in the past tense.
- I did...
- I ate...
- I took...
- I spoke...
- I drank...
But, when it's a negative statement, we use didn't, and your verb is in the present tense, the main verb.
- I didn't do...
- I didn't eat...
- He didn't speak...
- She didn't write... And, so on.
Now, for the questions form. Our auxiliary verb in the past tense goes first.
- Did you do you homework?
- Did he do his homework?
- Did she do her homework?
- Did we do our homework?
- Did they do their homework?
Another example:
- Did you eat chicken?
- Did he eat chicken?
- Did she eat chicken?
- Did it eat chicken?
- Did we eat chicken?
- Did they eat chicken?
Now, how can we answer the questions? With the same auxiliary verb.
Did you go to school? Yes, I did. And we can continue to give an explanation, I went to school.
Did you your homework? Yes, I did. I did my homework. Did he eat chicken? Yes, he did. He ate chicken. Did you speak English? Yes, I did. I spoke English. And it's the same for everyone. All you need to change are the pronouns or the names.
