Hi there! How are you today?
Today's class is going to be about Adverbs of Frequency. When and how to use them.
First, let me mention all the adverbs we're goint to use, and they are:
- Allways
- Usually
- Often
- Sometimes
- Hardly ever, and
- Never
OK. Now, how do we use them? When we're making a statement, first we use the pronoun, then the adverb of frequency and the verb. For example: I always get up early in the morning, I usually get up early in the morning, I sometimes get up early in the morning, or Sometimes I get up early in the morning, I hardly ever get up early in the morning, and, I never get up early in the morning.
As you notice, the adverb sometimes, can be used between the pronoun and the verb or at the beginning; I sometimes, or Sometimes I. And if we're talking in the third person it will be: She always gets up early in the morning, She usually gets up early in the morning, Sometimes she gets up early in the morning, or She sometimes gets up early in the morning, She hardly ever gets up early in the morning, or, She never gets up early in the morning.
Questions: Do you ever get up early in the morning? We use the adverb ever to ask if somebody at sometime does something: Do you ever get up early in the morning?; and then you can answer: Yes, I always get up early in the morning. Or, Yes, I always do. Or, Yes, I usually do. Or, No, I almost never do. And, so on for any questions we want to ask and answer it; Do you ever watch movies on weekends? Yes, I usually watch movies on weekends. Does he ever watch movies on weekends? Yes, he sometimes watches movies on weekends. And, so on. So remember, first if we're making a statement, it is pronoun, adverb of frequency, and the main verb; I always get up, I usually go to school, I sometimes eat fruit, I hardly ever eat fish, I never drink milk.
When you ask you use: the auxiliary verb, the pronoun and the adverb; Do you ever... Do you ever go to Mexico City? Yes, I usually go to Mexico City. Sometimes I go to Mexico City. I go to Mexico City once a week. I go to Mexico City twice a year. I almost always go to Mexico City on the weekend.
